Green Building

Green building is an outcome of a design philosophy which focuses on increasing the efficiency of resource use — energy, water, and materials — while reducing building impacts on human health and the environment during the building's lifecycle, through better siting, design, construction, operation, maintenance, and removal. By far, the greenest house is the one already built. It saves large quantities of natural resources and embodied energy, in addition to saving time and money. Every renovation and home addition is an opportunity to build green and promote a healthier environment. We actively work with local energy auditors and other specialists to outline specific improvement strategies based on the homeowners needs.
Technologies and strategies that we currently utilize include, but are not limited to:

  • high efficiency HVAC systems (to maximize heating and cooling and minimize energy use);
  • solar hot water and tankless on-demand water systems;
  • rainwater /gray water catchment and re-use;
  • PV solar panels;
  • advanced framing techniques;
  • salvaging, recycling and reclaiming materials from the existing structure;
  • buying local to reduce distances materials must travel.
As well, Quest considers the tax implications, rebate offers and soft benefits associated with environmentally friendly construction. In North Carolina it is possible to get income, corporate and property tax incentives for green construction. In addition, when selecting to use products and technologies that are currently more expensive than the traditional alternatives, the benefits come through in a better, more efficient use of energy in the home and the likely production of renewable energy.

Eco Friendly Materials

There are a number of different strategies that we employ to create efficient, healthy and beautiful interior spaces. Indoor air quality, high energy efficiency, water conservation, durability of materials, and resource efficiency are all part of the equation. We always encourage and specify low flow plumbing fixtures and energy-efficient appliances. In addition, we advocate for not building more than what you need. For example, there are times that the initial phase of the design process may shift the objective from adding on an addition to using the existing space more efficiently.

Often times, traditional building materials contain VOCs and other harmful chemicals that can create health issues for the home’s occupants. Quest encourages the use of healthy products ranging from kitchen cabinets to interior finish materials, such as paint and flooring. We work with the homeowner to select the most appropriate materials for the home. We look at what natural resources were used to make the product, if it can be reused or recycled, and how long the material will last. The life cycle of the product, including the healthfulness and ease of maintenance, are critical factors in the selection process as well. In addition, allowing structural materials to remain exposed and used as finish materials, decreases the depletion of natural resources, as does using salvaged materials.

When budget allows, we prefer to use FSC certified wood, which ensures the wood products are sustainably harvested Other pertinent strategies include passive solar orientation when an addition is in the scope, using water purification systems and installing air purification systems for allergy sufferers. To every extent possible, Quest takes a holistic approach with every project.
